Avenues for Youth

For the last 27 years, Avenues for Youth (Avenues) has supported youth ages 16-24 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Whether a young person needs a place to stay for just one night or for an entire year, Avenues provides youth with the tools to find their path out of homelessness. We do that by providing a stable home, building trusting relationships and navigating youth’s education, career, health and wellness and housing goals.

The population of those experiencing homelessness and unstable housing situations includes a disproportionate number of Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) identified youth. In fact, the Wilder Research study reports interviewing 35% BIPOC and 23% LGBTQI+ youth. BIPOC youth are overrepresented in the population experiencing homelessness because of systems of oppression, racism, and poverty while LGBTQI+ youth often experience homelessness if asked to leave home when they come out or disclose their sexual orientation or identities to their families. Regardless of the reasons why a youth experiences homelessness, they all face extraordinary challenges and barriers. Nearly 50% of homeless youth report experiencing violence or sexual exploitation while being homeless and many became homeless due to domestic violence within their families of origin.

Avenues for Youth (Avenues) supports more than 250 youth aged 16-24 who are experiencing homelessness and other unstable housing situations by providing emergency shelter, short-term housing, and holistic support in a safe and nurturing environment. Avenues helps youth make a positive transition into young adulthood, assists them with finding their path out of homelessness, and guides young people with their education, career, health and wellness and housing goals.
