The story of heARTS began when our founder, Lindsay Walz, was just 16 years old and had the opportunity to support the startup of a nonprofit community center in rural Minnesota as a youth member of the Board of Directors. This experience planted the seed for her to open a youth center to offer the same opportunities that she had to learn and grow. This became the big dream that lit her path as she moved from high school to college, and into her professional career as a youth worker.
The day Lindsay survived the 35W bridge collapse, she thought about that long-held dream and wondered if it was the reason she survived. The opportunities Lindsay had to heal, to make meaning, and to grow are privileges she has not taken for granted. Creating a space where youth in the community can transform their own hurts, grow their own dreams, and learn to thrive is her way of making meaning of that life-changing day.
She started courageous heARTS to create a community art space steeped in values, not rules, that assumes good will and honors the spirit of connection and interdependence essential for all communities.
In 2017, courageous heARTS worked with La Piana Consulting to develop a Strategy Roadmap and was identified as being in the “Ground and Grow” stage of the organizational life stage. Since then we have been grounding ourselves in our purpose and growing in lots of new ways!
As we enter 2019, our question is shifting from “How can we build this to be viable?” into “How can the momentum be sustained?” We are looking for board members who can provide stability, experiential wisdom, and professional expertise to help us level up our support and operations toward a sustainable future.
Our strategic focus for 2019 is building community awareness and brand development. We have gone through an evolution during our start-up years as we have navigated our purpose and the needs of the community. Our foundation has been built and now we need to grow our supports. The other strategic imperative is continuing to build the capacity of our governance bodies: board of directors, youth advisory board and committees, to meet the growing/changing needs of the organization as we shift from an all-volunteer operation to a “slightly staffed” one (with our new apprentice program).
