NECHAMA — Jewish Response to Disaster

History

Founded by four Minneapolis-based friends who wanted to help following the Great Flood of 1993 when both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers flooded over a period of 7 months, leading to 32 deaths and over $15 billion in damage.  The friends loaded a truck with tools and headed to Iowa.  That first trip was the beginning of what would become NECHAMA (which means “to comfort” in Hebrew) and its direct and effective programs to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.

NECHAMA is inclusive and welcomes volunteers and provides assistance to disaster survivors of all faiths.
