Watercourse Counseling Center

The original goal of the four founders of The Mental Health Collective, now Watercourse Counseling, was to utilize their skills as mental health providers for innovative program development that addressed the continuum of mental health needs for both prevention and intervention and stretched traditional definitions of mental health service delivery.  The process of developing as an agency including an emphasis on partnering with other organizations and As an organization, we believe that individual health is impacted by the health of the community and that individuals can contribute greatly to improving community health. Our guiding philosophy continues to emphasize prevention and partnership as a means to support equitable access to resources that support wellness.

We currently operate a community mental health clinic in South Minneapolis and provide school-based services at eleven schools in the MPS district.  In addition, we provide community outreach at various locations, have worked closely with immigrant communities to provide education and support around mental health issues, and offer training programs for graduate students in the field of mental health and for mental health practitioners who are working on their professional licensure goals.

Our current long term strategic goals include:

  • Ensuring solid financial and governance practices as we enter our third decade of operation
  • Expanding our reach – continuing to look for strategic opportunities to fund and implement new programs/services
  • Building a vibrant organizational culture
  • Continuing to address equity and diversity across the organization

Goals for the next year include:

  • Implementing technology and infrastructure improvements to support future growth
  • Expanding our board of directors with attention to representation from communities that we serve
  • Planning for transition of the current Executive Director and founder
  • Hiring and supporting the addition of a Clinical Director at the agency (recently hired)
  • Expanding our individual donor development program

Annual Budget: $1.3 million – Earned income, Federal or State contracts, Foundations


Watercourse Counseling Center is seeking board members who have a passion for its mission and the following skills and experience:

  • Meeting time and frequency:  Monthly
  • Meeting location: Minneapolis


  • Time Expectation: Up to 5 hours/month
  • Financial Contribution Required: Yes, at a level meaningful to the board member.
  • Service on Committee Required: No
  • Length of Term: 2 Years
  • Renewable: Yes
