Yellow Tree Theatre was founded in 2008 by theater artists and husband/wife team Jason Peterson and Jessica Lind Peterson in response to a need for the arts in the Northwest Suburbs of Minneapolis. Yellow Tree was born with the goal of creating a welcoming artistic venue, with live theater as its backbone, which would also serve as a vibrant artistic hub for the community. Also, our artists are hugely important to us, and we seek to cultivate a theater company where artists are creatively challenged, artistically inspired and financially supported.
Over the past ten years, YTT has produced forty-five productions, ten world premieres and served thousands of loyal patrons. YTT was awarded a 2016 National Theater Company Grant from the American Theater Wing and is generously supported by the McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Our current strategic plan outlines two main priorities: to establish a sponsorship program to help grow funding, and to increase diversity within the organization.
Regarding the sponsorship program, our first-ever Managing Director was hired in August to spearhead the initiative. A plan is being developed to identify and reach out to potential sponsors. In time for the 2019-2020 season, a full sponsorship program (with brochure, promotional deck, and benefit schedule) will be implemented.
Regarding diversity, Yellow Tree seeks to increase representation of people of color and other minorities in its staff, Board, artists, and audience. Several initiatives have begun, including naming a staff person as the primary diversity officer and implementing a series of demographic surveys to create a baseline from which to measure success. Specific plans are being made for identifying and reaching out to the diverse communities within a 10-mile radius of our location. An overall diversity increase of 20% by 2020 is our goal.
In addition, adequate artist compensation continues to be a main priority. Yellow Tree seeks to be competitive in salaries with other mid-size Twin Cities theaters, with a goal of increasing salaries for actors, designers, and artisans by 30% by 2020.
