The board of directors of a nonprofit organization has legal responsibility for the organization’s work. The board is responsible for short and long-term planning, and they must ensure that systems are in place for administering and effectively using resources and guarding against misuse. In order to fulfill their responsibilities, board members must be able to rely on financial information that is accurate, timely, in context, and appropriate.

About the Presenter

Sarah Jackson

I’ve been working with or for nonprofit organizations in Minnesota for more than a decade in various roles including as executive director of the Minnesota News Council and program director for the Minnesota Newspaper Association. Knowledge of nonprofit finance once eluded me, but now I love helping nonprofit leaders decipher and understand the often exclusionary language of finance. As a lender, trainer and partner, I work closely with nonprofits in the upper Midwest supporting their important mission-driven work. I earned degrees in Journalism and Philosophy from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. I love books, newspapers, travel, cooking, sports, and Lake Superior.
